Red grapes

Grapes don't just taste lovely, they are also a major storage of antioxidants. Within the skin of red grapes are phenolic pigments that prevent cancerous genes from forming. They have also been proven to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart attacks.

I currently supplement my diet with at least a handful of red grapes 3 times a week.

Weight lifting

My sister is studying sports and is destined to become a PE teacher/personal trainer and she has advised me of a simple method to train your heart and tone your upper body.

Start by lifting weights that you feel comfortable with and see how many reps you can do. By gradually increasing the number/weight you will be able to see your progress as the days/weeks go on. I am naturally slim and was self-conscious of the lack of bulk on my arms however after just 2 weeks of weight lifting I can already see a slight difference!

It is important not to over do it as it can cause headaches and muscle strain. A set weight of 2-5kg for each arm will ensure toned arms and strengthens the heart.

Green tea

Green tea is full of antioxidants which are important in clearing up free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative damage within the body and their deleterious effect on DNA is a major cause of cancer.

I drink a cup of green tea everyday - however I find it is best to drink after a meal (the taste is not everyone's cup of tea!). Long term studies on the effects of green tea have proven it beneficial and it has been used for many years for its antioxidant properties.

Of course it is not a miracle drink and it can't guarantee to improve longevity, however it is a good method of increasing body antioxidants and preventing damage.

Why Nutrition is Important

Hey there, I'm a 20 year old semi-nutritionist (1 year until I get my degree!) with a passion to improve people's well-being through their diet. The prevalence of chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes is rapidly increasing and an improvement in nutrition is all it takes to decrease the risk. I have spoken to many qualified nutritionists and understand the simple secrets of a healthy lifestyle.
To be healthy does not necessarily mean 5 portions of fruit/veg a day, no chocolate and hours of exercise. Everyone is different and any "bad" food can be eaten within moderation. Its all about the balance of healthy foods with unhealthy.
Throughout my blog I will be focusing primarily on improving lifestyle in a way that increases longevity by decreasing the risk of developing chronic disea
ses. I will regularly post useful tips that I have found to have beneficial effects on health (Through own administration and group studies).

Looking good is always fun but in the end I believe a healthier body inside is a happier body.
